Sleep Questions, Answered
Including the awkward ones. If something is not answered here, email support@tipsforinsomnia.com.
What is the fastest thing I can change to sleep better?
For most people it is a fixed wake time, held seven days a week including weekends, with daylight and a little movement in the first half hour. It is unglamorous and it is uncomfortable for the first few days, but it does more than any evening tip because it is what actually sets your body clock.
Why has none of the usual sleep advice worked for me?
Usually one of three reasons. The advice was never your bottleneck — cutting caffeine does nothing if caffeine was not the problem. Or you changed several things at once, so nothing could be attributed and nothing carried forward. Or the problem has moved past habits, and persistent insomnia is treated differently from occasional bad sleep.
Does this site diagnose insomnia?
No, and it will not try to. Nothing here can tell you whether you have insomnia, sleep apnea or any other condition. The Sleep Friction Check looks at everyday habits and surroundings and points at the ones most worth changing first. If your sleep has been a problem for months or is affecting your days, that is a conversation for a doctor.
Is the Sleep Friction Check really free?
Yes. No account, no email address, no card. It runs entirely in your browser and your answers are never sent anywhere. If you never buy anything, you still leave with the area worth starting on, three things to try and one thing to notice.
What does the $9 Sleep Reset OS add?
Personalization and implementation, not more information. It builds your wind-down backwards from the bedtime you want, sets a morning anchor with a realistic floor, ranks your bedroom down to three fixes, plans your caffeine test, and gives you a 7-day reset, a 14-day plan, experiments, a tracker and a Tonight Mode for the nights it goes wrong anyway.
Is Sleep Reset OS a subscription?
No. It is a single $9 payment. There is no renewal, no membership, no trial that converts, and no card kept on file. There is also a 14-day refund with no justification required.
Who writes this site?
The Tips for Insomnia editorial team. We do not invent credentials and there is no fictional sleep doctor with a stock photo. Health-adjacent statements are written from named public health sources — the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the NIH institutes, MedlinePlus, the FDA and the NHS — and every source URL was fetched and confirmed before it was published.
Is this medical advice?
No. It is general educational information about sleep habits and it is not a substitute for individualized medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. If something about your sleep worries you, or if a clinician tells you something that differs from anything here, follow the clinician.
When should I see a doctor about my sleep?
When it has persisted and is affecting how you function during the day, when you snore loudly with pauses or gasping, when you are dangerously sleepy — especially at the wheel — when pain is involved, when it starts suddenly with no explanation, or when it comes with low mood. None of those means something is definitely wrong; they mean it is worth a proper look.
Do you recommend melatonin or sleeping tablets?
We do not give advice about starting, stopping, changing or dosing any sleep medication or supplement, including melatonin. Those decisions belong with a clinician or a pharmacist who knows your situation. This site is not funded by supplement sales and never will be.
What happens to my answers and my sleep notes?
They stay in your own browser. There is no account and no server storing them. Nothing you answer goes in a URL, so it cannot leak through browser history or through the referrer sent to external links. None of it enters analytics — we count that a check was completed, never what was said in it. Clearing this site’s data deletes everything.
How long does it take to see a difference?
Honestly, it varies, and anyone giving you a number is guessing. A single change usually needs five to seven nights before you can judge it, because one or two nights tell you nothing either way. Schedule changes take longer than that, and they go faster when you move your wake time rather than your bedtime.
Can you cure my insomnia?
No. Nothing on this site cures anything, and we would not publish that claim. Persistent insomnia has treatments with genuinely good evidence behind them — cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia in particular — and they are delivered by trained providers, not by a website. What this site can do is help you organize your own habits into something you can test.
Do I need a sleep tracker or a smartwatch?
No, and if precise tracking makes you anxious it is doing you harm rather than good. The tracker in Sleep Reset OS is deliberately loose: six approximate fields in the morning, never during the night, never to the minute.
Do you use AI to write the guides?
The guides are drafted with AI assistance and then constrained hard: every health-adjacent claim must come from the verified source registry, and automated checks reject cure claims, invented statistics, diagnostic language and any external link that is not on the approved list. The editorial policy explains exactly what is checked and what is not.
Still Deciding?
The Sleep Friction Check is free, takes about two minutes, and is useful whether or not you ever buy anything.
